Receive a call from a friend who work in a medium size company. He need my help to compile a simple Six Sigma overview power point slide for him to share with the board of directors. The education background of the board members is the biggest challenge for him to sell the Six Sigma concept.
I do facing the similar problem few years back when in try to sell the concept to a small factory owner. They are the people usually have little knowledge of scientific management, most of them by default do not believe ideas developed from MNC worked in their small and messy company. They don’t have the additional resources to manage the program and most of them not willing to pay for it.
In order to attract their interest, I try not to be too technical when explaining the concept. They are not interested to know the history and the development of Six Sigma, they just want to know how Six Sigma can help to improve their business profitability and the amount of capital investment required.

My answer :
Motorola Inc originated Six Sigma problem solving methodology in early 1980, with the objective of reducing defective product to the level of lesser than ten per million units produced.
Six Sigma today has developed into a cost saving program through breakthrough improvement that emphasis in integration of statistic and problem solving tools in a systematic approach. Application of Six Sigma as a problem solving tools has expanded beyond the manufacturing operation. It is also widely use in service industries such as banking, hotel and consulting service for customer service satisfaction assessment and new product development.
How Six Sigma works in my company ?
My answer :
Six Sigma project start from the company financial statement. Top management should able to identification many management problem through deep analysis of company financial performance. By listing down the management problems and eliminate it through the systematic DMAIC problem solving approaches, any positive result from the improvement activities will definitely influences the company financial performance.
It is a good news to know that another company is setting Six Sigma deployment as a goal for year 2008.
